Wilderness Bear…
Well like many of you, I set out Friday after a long work week to hunt the opener in California for Deer and Bear. I headed for a trailhead I have not bee in over 6 years in hopes of seeing something different from the years past. With a 4 hour drive and about a 5 mile pack I was there. I set up a dry camp in the top of a basin, went and fetched some water and off to glassing for the evening. Shockingly, I glassed up 5 other hunters and about 20 does. Needless to say I didn’t sleep well.

Scouting: 40 in 48
The title sums up a very tough scouting trip I just returned from. One of my hunting buddies and I hiked 40 miles in 48 hours in one of California’s Wilderness’. It wasn’t planned that way, but when your looking for new country to hunt, you do what you have to do.

Kuiu Icon 6000 & 3000 Packs
I have now had my Kuiu Icon Packs for about a month now. I have both the 6000 and 3000 bags that Kuiu offers and one of their carbon fiber frames and suspensions. Both bags work with the same frame and suspension. Changing the bags takes me about 3 to 5 minutes, but I would imagine that after doing it just more than a couple of times you can get faster.

Scouting Gear
My first scouting trip is coming up in less than a week. I am heading to a new area to look for deer, bear and some other critters. I will be in the wilderness for 4 days and 3 nights. I have mapped out my route, marked where I want to camp each night,

Solo Wilderness
For all those DIY wilderness hunters or those that find themselves hunting far from their vehicle for multiple days, I am going to start some articles related to what I do to make it for a week or so on my own hunting. I generally hunt the wilderness areas here in California. On occasion I will have someone come along, but more often than not I am at it by myself. Wilderness hunting on your own is unique way of hunting
